Security Radar


The ideal solution for protection of industrial plants, photovoltaic installations, power stations, seaports and airports

Radar Navtech technology is a solution based on radar technology with millimeter waves (76-77Ghz) that enable to develop very effective perimeter protection systems for industrial plants, photovoltaic installations, power stations, seaports, airports and more generally for all large critical infrastructures.

The solution is made of two main components:

  • Radar sensors
  • Witness software

Navtech Radar can be easily integrated with other security systems, such as visible and thermal video surveillance cameras, microwave barriers and other types of sensors in order to provide a unique and integrated solution for an optimum management of critical plants or large infrastructures security.

Radars features

There are several types of radar sensors which can be differentiated according to target detection ranges or possible installation height. Detection ranges vary from a minimum of 100m to a maximum of 3000m. The “X” suffix in the radar code indicates the model that can installed from ground to 10m high.

Each radar sensor sweeps a full 360 degrees every second (1Hz frequency) in the pre-defined detection zones using a millimeter wave samples method on 76-77Ghz frequency band, with very low power (about 10mW).

Radar Range

Thanks to continuous scan cycles, the radar can determine the exact location, speed and path of travel of the targets (vehicle, people, etc.…) with a 17.5-23cm resolution. All the radars have an IP67 degree of protection in order to allow installation even with bad weather and light conditions and with temperatures between -20°to +60°C.

Radar sensors need very low power; they can even be powered by a solar panel in remote locations without electric power.

Witness Software

The information about the detected targets is sent to an intelligent analysis software called “Witness”. This software enables to define security policies that have to be implemented for site protection with one or more radar sensors to provide coverage of critical areas that should be monitored in case of anomaly, critical or intrusion situations.

Set up of detection areas and alarms is made through Sentinel user interface that enables to:

  • Upload photogrammetry and planimetry of the site that has to be secured so that the operator can have a real time and immediate vision of the alert and the exact position of the target;
  • Set up the detection, pre alarm and alarm areas in order to have an accurate control of all the areas of the site.
  • Set up complex alarm rules according to one or more parameter such as: position, speed, path of the travel, alarm area, event time and number of repetition of the event.

Sentinel

You can see 3 areas with different colors:

  • Orange - detection area; in this area targets are detected without generating alarm but through the Cyclops software, targets are tacked by one or more PTZ cameras to get some images of the target;
  • Green - pre-alert area: if a target is detected in this area the system generates a non-critical alarm so that security operators can control in advance the target behavior thanks to the automatic tracking of Cyclops module interfaced with one or more PTZ cameras and get some images of the target;
  • Red - alarm area: if a target is detected in this area the system generates a critical alarm so that security operators can control in advance the target behavior thanks to the automatic tracking of Cyclops module interfaced with one or more PTZ cameras and get some images of the target;

Outside these areas the system still detects and tracks targets without sending any alarm. It is also possible to set up “No-detection” areas for which the system does not make any control or target tracking. Types and number of areas definition is very flexible according to security policies that have to be implemented for site protection.

For each area it is possible to link one or more alarm rules according to specific parameters such as speed (e.g. generate an alarm if the target speed is superior or inferior to the set up limit), direction (e.g. generate an alarm if the target is going in a non-authorized direction). This system enables to have an accurate control of security policies and to reduce significantly false alarms so that operators can focus on real alarms.

Effective in all weather and light conditions

Navtech radars guarantee optimal performances even in extreme weather and light conditions such as heavy rains, fog, snow, quick change of lights. The radar solution is generally unaffected by environmental conditions whereas other technologies like cameras with video analysis usually struggle with the changing weather or light conditions that impact on image quality. Navtech radars use a scanning method with electromagnetic waves of 76-77Ghz that can pass through rain/fog/snow maintaining high performances. Contrary to cameras, radars are not based on images therefore they have very effective even without any light.

Early Detection

The combination of several radars in strategic location guarantees a 360° coverage in order to detect targets before break-in. This detection technique called "Early detection" is particularly important because radars detect intrusion before the target pass through the protected site perimeter.

Very low false alarm rate

Navtech radars guarantee very low false alarm rate respect to other automatic detection technologies for critical road situations. In fact Navtech radar solution is not based on images analysis and has high performances in all working conditions. For example, video analysis systems based on cameras have very high false alarm rate since their analysis algorithm is particularly sensitive to critical working and environment situations, such as:

  • rain, fog, snow etc. that reduce system efficacy and cause false alarm due to the movement of atmospheric agents;
  • light reflection due to reverberation of asphalt or cars headlamps that creates sudden light variation into the scene;
  • shadows that mislead video analysis systems as the shadow may be considered as a moving target in the analysis area.

For all these aspects, radars are for sure a more reliable solution for outdoor perimeter security systems.

Low maintenance costs

Contrary to other technologies that request frequent ordinary maintenance (e.g. camera cleaning), radars need very little maintenance. Accumulated dusts on radars do not affect their performance; therefore it is not necessary to plan cleaning interventions. ClearWay radar MTBF is 75.000 hours (about 8 years)

Stationary targets detection

Unlike doppler radars, Navtech radars thanks to millimeter waves can detect stationary targets (e.g. stationary vehicle, immobile pedestrian) within a 17.5-23cm resolution.

Electromagnetic compatibility

Navtech radars have a restrained electromagnetic emission (about 10mW) and are compliant to electromagnetic emission standards: ETSI EN 301 091-1 including ENV 50166-2 standard (Human exposure to electromagnetic fields), that guarantee total people safety.
